Suitable for beginners with a basic understanding of materials (inks, writing surfaces & tools), as well as those with considerable experience, this 3-week course teaches italic letterforms, continuing with materials and tools.

About the course

Italic letterforms, continuing with materials and tools, project assignments. Taught by Ewan to the depth that it used be at Roehampton. Students are expected to complete an additional one day of home-work. Limited places. The course is suitable for beginners with a basic understanding of materials (inks, writing surfaces & tools), as well as those with considerable experience. The benefit of a course such as this comes from having a concentrated period of time devoted to growing one's calligraphic skills, the sustained programme of learning helps it bed down in your motor system and grow your imagination, skill and confidence. There are also a limited number of places for advanced students who may want to audit the course whilst working on their own projects.

  • An introduction to formal italic writing, its development and history.

  • Looking at related form, geometry, and movement of Italic.

  • Flow and ease in writing.

  • Italic capitals, flourishing.

  • Review and planning individual future learning.

Where and when

The course lasts 3 weeks in September 2026, Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays.

Three days a week instruction, from 9:30am-4:30pm

Access to the studio will from 9:00am-5:00pm, with some additional open studio work days to be determined on a weekly basis.

Cost

The course cost is £650 of which a 30% non-refundable deposit required by August 1st, 2024 to secure a spot.

Enrollment advice

This class is designed as continuation from the Foundations of Calligraphy Part 1, though that is not a formal pre-requisite. The variety of levels in this class has been one of its riches. It is highly recommended to have a basic understanding of materials (inks, writing surfaces & tools.) Please contact Ewan if you’d like to discuss suitability and your goals for the course.
